![]() Polymeshes, on the other hand, are in some ways morepowerful than triangle meshes, in that they allow faces to have more thanthree sides. For this reason, you will sometimes want to use splinemeshes for creating certain types of fairly simple objects, but not for anythingwhich is very complex. Spline meshes lend themselves more naturally to creatingcertain types of shapes than do triangle meshes, but they are much lesspowerful overall. I will, however, try to get most of them, and the remaining onesshould be easy enough to figure out.īefore going on to the tutorial itself, I should mention two other types ofobjects that can also be used for creating free-form surfaces: spline meshesand polymeshes. It is not intended to be comprehensive: I will not be covering every last feature of themesh editor. This tutorial will introduce you to triangle meshes: what they are, how tocreate them, and some of the tools available for editing them. Or mostly smooth, but with a few sharp points andcreases. The surface itself, however, may be either faceted or smoothly rounded. The triangularfacets act as a control mesh by which you can define the surface. In Art of Illusion, it is only the beginning.Ī more accurate answer is, "a surface defined by a mesh of triangular facets."Note the difference: "defined by" rather than "composed of". So what, exactly, are triangle meshes? The most obvious answer is, "a surfacecomposed of triangular facets." In most 3D programs, that would also be thecomplete answer. I, being merely a programmer, refer to them by the rather more humble description of "triangle meshes". They actually have very little to do with NURBs (in fact, they are much morepowerful than NURBs), but I guess the salespeople liked the way it sounded. This is, infact, the sort of name that similar tools tend to have when they appear inother 3D programs: Meta-NURBs in Lightwave, Hyper-NURBs in Cinema 4D, etc. If I were a salesman, I would have called them "Hyper-MorphicNURBoid Meta-Meshes", or something equally impressive sounding. They are also proof that I am a programmer, nota salesman. IntroductionTriangle meshes in Art of Illusion are an amazingly powerful tool for creatingobjects with complex shapes.
